BUREWIY: Interceptor Drone for Russian Recon Drones

Developed by Kyiv-based WIY DRONES as a follow-up to the successful STRILA project, BUREWIY (“Stormwind”) is a specialized interceptor drone designed to neutralize Russian reconnaissance UAVs such as the Orlan, Zala, and SuperCam—key assets used by the enemy for artillery spotting and intelligence gathering.

BUREWIY operates in medium-altitude airspace, capable of intercepting aerial targets flying between 1,000 and 2,000 meters at speeds up to 250 km/h. Its mission is to prevent enemy drones from relaying battlefield intelligence, thus blinding and disrupting Russian operations.

The drone features a proprietary digital communication and control system developed entirely in-house, ensuring secure, robust operation. It uses Walksnail video transmission technology—a trusted system already popular among Ukrainian forces in combat. Like its predecessor STRILA, BUREWIY uses custom-designed propellers built by WIY DRONES, enhancing flight stability and precision interception.

One of BUREWIY’s key tactical advantages is its ability to launch from mobile platforms, allowing for rapid deployment and fast response to aerial threats. Though not yet deployed to operational units, the drone has already passed multiple rounds of testing, including those conducted by a Ukrainian Ministry of Defence commission. It is currently in the final stages of codification and is expected to enter service within weeks or months, either through direct procurement or Ministry of Defence channels.

BUREWIY showcases the increasing sophistication of Ukraine’s defense tech sector, offering a rapid, precise, and mobile solution to the growing threat of enemy reconnaissance UAVs.
