Liquid Robotics company

Liquid Robotics, a Boeing subsidiary, develops wave and solar-powered autonomous ocean robots that enable persistent, real-time maritime data collection and global ocean monitoring.

Liquid Robotics overview

Liquid Robotics, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Boeing Company, is a maritime robotics company specializing in the design and manufacture of the Wave Glider — the world’s first wave and solar-powered uncrewed ocean robot. Headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, with an Engineering & Test Facility in Hawai’i, the company works with global partners to transform how the ocean is observed, measured, and protected.

Since 2007, Liquid Robotics has conducted hundreds of Wave Glider missions across the globe, from the Arctic to Antarctica, serving defense, commercial, and scientific markets. Its technology is deployed in some of the most remote and challenging ocean environments on Earth.

Mission and Vision

The company operates at the intersection of ocean science, defense, and autonomous systems. Its mission is to enable continuous, real-time understanding of the ocean by deploying persistent autonomous platforms that extend human reach into maritime environments.

The ocean is described as the last great frontier — covering most of the Earth’s surface, producing 70% of its oxygen, and serving as a critical source of food, energy, and global economic activity. At the same time, it is an increasingly contested operational domain, requiring continuous monitoring and situational awareness.

Liquid Robotics positions its technology as a foundational element of the emerging Digital Ocean — a connected maritime environment where sensors, autonomous systems, and satellites form a unified data network.

Core Technology — Wave Glider

The Wave Glider is an autonomous uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) powered by wave energy for propulsion and solar energy for onboard systems. It is designed to operate individually or in fleets, continuously collecting and transmitting ocean data in real time.

The platform is capable of long-duration missions of up to one year without fuel, crew, or emissions, enabling persistent maritime presence in remote and inaccessible regions.

By sitting at the ocean surface, the Wave Glider acts as a critical data node, connecting subsea sensors to satellite and terrestrial networks, enabling real-time global maritime awareness.
