Uncrewed Systems and Autonomous Technologies

Leonardo is a leading developer of uncrewed systems for air, land and sea applications, serving both civil and military sectors. Its solutions are widely used for Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions, threat simulation training, border security, maritime patrol, and infrastructure protection.

Leonardo’s uncrewed portfolio is built around modular and flexible architectures, integrating:

  • Uncrewed platforms

  • Radar and electro-optical sensors

  • Mission systems

  • Ground control stations

In parallel, Leonardo develops Uncrewed Traffic Management (UTM) technologies to enable safe integration of remotely piloted aircraft into shared airspace, as well as Counter-UAS systems to protect airports and critical infrastructure from malicious or accidental drone incursions.

Operational Footprint

  • Over 800 uncrewed aircraft currently operating

  • Active in 27 countries worldwide

  • 50+ Falco remotely piloted aircraft systems sold globally

International Programmes and Partnerships

Leonardo is a core partner in several flagship international programmes:

  • Eurodrone – Europe’s Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) uncrewed system, developed with France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Eurodrone is designed for operations in non-segregated airspace and delivers strategic ISTAR capabilities through a modular mission architecture.

  • Skydweller – A pioneering solar-powered uncrewed aircraft capable of unlimited flight endurance, designed for high-altitude, long-persistence missions including land and maritime surveillance, environmental monitoring, telecommunications and precision navigation.

Leonardo also supports international government missions such as MONUSCO and FRONTEX, providing patrol and surveillance capabilities in complex operational environments.

Technology Portfolio and Solutions

Leonardo’s uncrewed and aerospace ecosystem includes a wide range of platforms, systems and services, such as:

  • Falco family (Falco EVO, Falco Xplorer) for persistent multi-sensor surveillance

  • AWHERO rotary-wing UAS for naval and land operations

  • CREX-B micro-UAS for special operations forces

  • MIRACH aerial target systems

  • C4I Ground Centres and integrated command-and-control solutions

  • UAV Battlelab and advanced training, simulation and mission support systems

These capabilities are complemented by Leonardo’s broader aircraft, electronics, cyber, space, training and integrated logistics solutions.

Commitment to the Future

Through sustained investment, international collaboration and operationally driven innovation, Leonardo continues to advance autonomous systems, digital technologies and integrated defence solutions, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of European and global security.
